Bubbles/ Sparkling Wines - Franciacorta Fratus

Franciacorta Fratus

Franciacorta is a sparkling wine from Lombardy with DOCG status produced from grapes grown within the boundaries of the territory of Franciacorta. A sparkling wine that is made by metodo classico - traditional 'champagne' making method. Made predominately from Chardonnay and Pinot bianco, sparklers labeled under the Franciacorta DOCG are permitted to include no more than 15% Pinot nero. Both vintage and non-vintage Franciacorta sparklers are made which require 30 and 18 months, respectively, of aging on the lees.

Non-vintage Franciacorta (NV) may not be released until at least 25 months after harvest, of which 18 months must be in contact with the yeast in the bottle (compared to 15 months in the case of Champagne).

Fratus, a longstanding family winery, is based in the province of Brescia, in the heart of the Franciacorta area, situated in inaccessible paths on the slopes of Monte Orfano. It is a southwards slope which has a very particular role in the Franciacorta composition and soil origins.

With 18 hectares under vine, the family produces wines of great refinement that are the fruits of its winemaking experience, consummate vineyard management and attention to detail throughout all the phases of the production process. The winery's decision to go fully organic derived from its commitment to combine in its products top quality and total integrity, taking full account of the ethical principles underpinning its relationships with all concerned.

The microclimate is usually less wet and rainy compared to the other D.O.C.G. (denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin) areas. This makes it possible to have riper grapes and higher concentrations.
